Video Review: The brilliant Singing Lessons NYC K-Pop star and Superstar K contestant Kate Kim. We were her first (and only) singing teacher before she was signed by a K-Pop label and moved to South Korea
Greetings, Good People of the Internet!
It is I, Ellie, classically- and jazzily-trained singer and founder of Singing Lesson NYC. Thanks for visiting our site!
We train singers and have a good time doing it. I and my associate teacher Lothair give non-boring voice lessons that are chock-full of awesome, love, and - just as importantly - solid technique you can use to sing a lot of different genres of music including pop, rock, jazz, blues, and R&B and we have a lot of clients who do Asian pop such as K-Pop, Canto-Pop, Mando-Pop, etc.
We take beginners - both those who wanna go pro and those who wanna go to the karaoke club and KILLLLLLLLL ITTTTTT - and also pro’s (Are you a pro? click here). We have a couple international pop stars (one multi-platinum) in our roster and that’s super fun, but what’s actually the funnest (<——new word) is to have a variety of different kinds of people at different points in their musical life. So we’re one of the studios with this kinda record that doesn’t make you audition to get a spot - we like beginners just as much as we like pros, and we can even work with you if your pitch sucks (meaning you “sing off key” or “are tone deaf” <——(Tone Deaf isn’t really a Thing (here, have another parenthesis:()))
I hire people based on their personality as well as their skills and that’s why we don’t have a lot of associates. What I look for in a teacher is: 1) The can teach, 2) they want to train in my method I’ve developed over the last 20 years, and 3) They have a certain joie de vivre and love in their heart. For real. The reason for that is that I know how scary it is for some people and we do accept beginners who are phobic and it’s better to have a good time in your lesson than not have a good time. And it’s better to work with a teacher with compassion AND teaching chops than just teaching chops.
So this is our homepage. It’s not as slick as some (and that’s on purpose), but Lothair and I are known for our compassion but also our honesty. And yes, you can be nice AND honest. Our philosophy is that we are all on this road learning about voice, and voice training works, so we are looking for where you are and bringing you along this journey - the same journey we are on. So being arrogant or judgy about something is not a part of that philosophy. And anyway, positive reinforcement works and negative reinforcement doesn’t work, especially on singers.
