Your speaking voice is often called “your other face” to acknowledge the impact it has on others’ perception of you, your trustworthiness, and your character. I know it isn’t right, but we judge people a lot by the sound of their speaking voice.

As a kid, I grew up with an attorney for a mother and heard these stories of lawyers from Back In The Day. Lawyers who enthralled people with their vocal presence, like Gladys Root. My mother was one of the first women to go through law school at the University of Southern California. It was her and like one other woman in her class! They would organize speakers to come to the law school to talk.

Gladys Root was renown as a crazy dresser! She was a defense attorney for criminal court as her gender would not allow for her to get employment in any other field but as a private attorney for the very dregs of the criminal law defendants. When she entered the room to give her talk, people were jeering and talking about her based on her appearance – the audience did not like her! But once she opened her mouth to speak, her voice was so mesmerizing that you could hear a metaphorical pin drop. She finished that talk as the most popular speaker they had had in that visiting attorney speaking program.
